In what feels to me like tying up loose ends and filling in the gaps of the band's legacy before moving on to its next stage, Novi Sad's PRKOS DRUMSKI have released two albums barely three months apart. Both albums, Svetlost i pustota **** (ROCKSVIRKE) and Nemir sveta **** (BRLOG RECORDS) are available for free download at www.bandcamp.com and are a treasure trove of lost tracks and live performances as might appear on extra bonus discs in a boxed set. Svetlost i pustota contains tracks from as early as 2004 and as late as 2013. It is bookended by versions of one of the band's earliest songs "De Profundis", from each of those years.
There are important performances by band members who have passed through the ranks but deserve recognition for their influence on its subsequent development. Prkos Drumski is essentially a folk band but this album evidences the breadth of its ambition and experimentation with excursions into blues and rock. Not everything is entirely successful. "Rejoice" has a trite and flawed English-language lyric that spoils some wonderful playing but that is the nature of the beast that is experimentation. It is only by playing with fire that you capture the beauty of the flame...
